Sydney Fish Market for Oysters
The blue-green waters off the southeast coast of Australia glisten as the sun rises above the horizon. Up early and eager, local fishermen brave the choppy seas as they collect their daily yield. Dedicated to the preservation, they work extra hard to follow environmentally sustainable fishing practices – including avoiding overfishing, staying clear of protected areas, releasing protected species, and using safe fishing gear.
As
they arrive back at the docks, the huge array of fresh seafood is put on ice
and shipped directly to Sea Harvest’s door in Canberra. Oysters, prawns,
mussels, calamari, lobster, snapper, and every seasonal fish available travels
straight from sea to store, just for you.
There
were diners enjoying lobsters and crabs, and we will return for those another
day.The service is simple and quite basic. You order at the bar, get a buzzer
to alert you the food is ready and help yourself to it from a counter on the
other side of the dining room. When seated outside you will enjoy the wildlife
that wanders around - gulls and a heron or two, and the resident pelican.
For
oysters "dry shucked" eat at Doyle's at the Sydney Fish Market, on
Gipp St, under the Pyrmont Bridge. With outdoor seating available for il fresco
dining, it offers fresh seafood, deliciously prepared. I had the oysters
"every way" with a variety of different sauces - Thai and Vinaigrette
to name two. I prefer the Pacific Oyster which has a brinier start, although
for the lovers of creamy oysters, Sydney Rock Oysters Marketin Australia
are your bet. We also tasted tempura battered whiting with chips - flaky and
delicate and cooked to perfection, and a platter of "BBQ'd" seafood -
scallop, prawns, calamari and fish! Delicious!
